2007 America’s Cup to be held in Spain
Société Nautique de Genève the current Trustee of the America’s Cup, announced that Valencia, Spain will be the host city for the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007.
Valencia was in front of three other European candidates:
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Marseille, France
- Naples, Italy.
“The combination of all the other criteria and the sailing conditions are the reason we chose Valencia,” said Michel Bonnefous, the chief executive officer of AC Management, the company set up by Alinghi to organize the defence of the cup.
This is the first time since the beginning of the cup in 1851 that the world’s oldest cup will be competed for in Europe. Other firsts for this cup will be the first time to be held outside of the host club’s country and the first time in a non-English speaking country.
Another first is Louis Vuitton (long time sponsor of the Louis Vuitton Cup to decide the challenger for the Americas Cup) will be the principal partner for the actual America’s Cup Match, in addition to some planned pre-regattas, and the Challenger races.
Louis Vuitton Watches will be the Official Timer for all events, and the Louis Vuitton Cup will be awarded to the winner of the Challenger Selection Series.
