Kiwi to take helm of Prada’s Cup challenge
Anthony Romano grew up selling vegetables from the family store in Nelson - now he is spearheading Italy’s 2007 America’s Cup challenge.
The 38-year-old’s appointment as general manager of Italy’s America’s Cup challenger Luna Rossa is the pinnacle of a high-flying career in finance, fashion and luxury living - Romano is the former head of Calvin Klein Europe.
A former Canterbury Rams guard, Romano’s sporting prowess as a youth was more evident in basketball than sailing, which he did not take up until moving to Italy in the early 1990s. His new job has posed a problem for his family.
“We always liked to think Team New Zealand would win, but now . . . we’re in two minds really,” said Romano’s father Tony, a former greenhouse owner in Nelson.
Anthony Romano admitted that at first he wondered where his own allegiance might lie, but said come Valencia (America’s Cup venue) in 2007, it would be “Luna Rossa all the way”. Team New Zealand was “one to beat”.
