New Zealand dominates Americas Cup runup
New Zealand’s America’s Cup sailing team has emerged on top after the second in a series of three regattas leading up to the prestigious race.
The races, which concluded Tuesday in the Gulf of Valencia off Spain, left New Zealand slightly ahead of the Italian team, known as Luna Rossa, Stuff.co.nz reported. BMW Oracle Racing, a U.S. team, was in third place, and the defending champions, Team Alinghi of Switzerland, were in fourth place.
The third and final regatta begins Sunday and runs through Wednesday.
The next America’s Cup is scheduled for 2007 and will be sailed in the Mediterranean Sea.
Many of the races in the second regatta were canceled due to light winds, but the Kiwis were able to capitalize on the conditions to win the series.
