$1.5bn Needed for Global Birdflu Campaign
International donors will need to contribute around 1.5 bn US to finance the second phase of the global campaign against birdflu at a coference in bejing next week.
Dr David Nabarro, senior coordinator for avian influenza at the United Nations said:
I’m optimistic delegates to the January 17-18 meeting in China would pledge the full amount.
But he also said this is just the beginning, implying that future campagins would be far more costly.
The money would help national governments and international organisations put measures in place to try to stem the spread of the disease in birds and prevent cases in humans, he said.
