Blogging that Reaches out
Bene Diction Blogs on is one of my regular reads there is always something thought provoking and stimulating to read there. I like it because there is generally a slightly different perspective being given which can be quite refreshing. These days I get a little tired of seeing the same thing being said over and over by bloggers on my rounds so Bene is towards the top of my RSS feed. Anyway today Bene writes a post titled Reaching Out which has a number of gems in it. Particularly I was struck by this quote from a blogger Bene had an email conversation with:
‘In the end, it may turn out to be a fruitless effort. But I have such a passion for this medium that I want to do what I can to try to bring us together. Blogging allows anyone to have a voice but if no one is listening its all in vain. I’m hoping that by helping the “voiceless” have their say that we will be able to impact our culture and move away from the purely political.‘
I agree with the sentiment. I easily get distracted by the potential blogging has for self gain. My hope in 2005 is that my blogging not only serves me but that I capture some of the spirit of that quote. I often write about how blogging can ‘give a voice’ to the voiceless and I’m keen to take my blogging more and more in that direction this year.
I’d really like to see a movement of bloggers rising up that explore the idea of blogging with a social conscience and would love to hear of your ideas and examples of blogs and bloggers that do in comments below. I think its time that we promote such examples to give them the profile that they deserve.
Update: Just after I hit post on this entry I was reminded of Trudy Schuett who is one blogger who I think is taking this philosophy to heart in her blogging. Check out her Positive Stories and Desert Light Journal for two examples of her blogging that I believe brings about change.
