Would you rather lose your Sight or Hearing?

Swade has submitted some excellent questions for me to answer today. Here is the first I’ll tackle:

‘If, for some strange reason, God came along and said he was going to take either your sense of sight or hearing away (you get to choose), which one would you want to keep and why?’

Good question - not considered this one before but off the top of my head I’d suggest that I’d rather lose hearing…not sight….hmmm…… no hearing (I think)….

Why? Well so much of what I do is related to my sight. Much of the communicating that I do is via the web which is sight related, my income is derived from reading, analyzing and writing etc. Plus the things I enjoy doing for fun are often sight related - photography, reading etc. I know that there are other ways to read using audio books and braille but I think it would be difficult.

Having said that there would be some massive changes in my life to lose hearing. What would you choose and why?

That’s a very tought question since I’m both an artist and a musician… I’d almost rather lose my sight, though. Hmmm…

Why? Well, I can lose my sight knowing that I have seen. Blind people who are born without sight never have that chance. So, in having seen, I know what it’s like to see.

Hearing is something that, even though we have the ability, we rarely actually use. We don’t listen well enough. We don’t know what it’s really like to be aware (which losing sight might really enhance).

All said and done, though, I think I’d rather be able to listen to music…and learn braille…and listen.

(And learn to spell -> tough.)

I’d also go for sight being gone. Music and communication is the main reason. It’d be way too frustrating for me if I couldn’t play music and chat with my wife.

Most of the people I’ve asked this (and for some strange reason, I seem to have asked a few) say they’d rather lose their hearing, but I’m with the other commenters: I’d rather lose my sight. It might have something to do with the fact that I’m a muso as well (or at least was, in another life… did a BA in Music at Melbourne once upon a time).
