Valerie Vili from New Zealand has smashed the Commonwealth Games record to win the Gold medal with a distance of 19.66m. Silver medal winner was Vivien Chukwuemeka from Nigeria and the bronze went to Cleopatra Borel-Brown from Trinidad and Tobago.

Inadequate preparations could mar Nigeria’s chances in athletic events of next month’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, says a former national coach, Tobia Igwe.
According to Igwe, “Nigerian athletes will not make much impact in athletics at the Commonwealth Games due to poor arrangements, as well as preparations�.

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed 32 athletes for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games..

Brown Ebewele has spoken out against the Nigerian Ministry of Sports due to their refusal to release training grants to athletes before the Games which would enable them to prepare. Instead, the grants are released during the Games which doesn’t provide any assistance in buildup and preparation.

Nigeria’s athletes have expressed delight over the announced resumption of the Commonwealth Games camping in Abuja on January 6th after it was suprisingly called off.
Attending the camp will be Uchenna Emedolu, Endurance Ojokolo, Mercy Nku and Deji Aliu.
