Chief Commissioner Completes Tour of Regional Games Venues

Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon finished a tour of regional Commonwealth Games venues this morning when she met with Venue Commander for the Geelong Basketball Arena, Acting Inspector Mick Myers.

Ms Nixon inspected regional basketball stadiums in Ballarat and Bendigo last week, and met with Venue Commander for the Traralgon Stadium Senior Sergeant Craig Gye yesterday.

Ms Nixon said it was important for her to visit the venues and meet with police assigned with responsibility for security at those venues.

“It’s very valuable for me to get a sense of each stadium and to meet with local police to discuss security arrangements, she said.

“The basketball stadiums look very impressive and I’m sure the communities of Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon and Geelong will reap the rewards of having the Games in their region for some time to come.

Ms Nixon said Victoria Police played a key role in ensuring the Games were enjoyed by everyone.

“We’ve put a lot of work into planning for the Games, liaising closely with State and Federal agencies to ensure all events and activities are enjoyed in a safe and secure environment, Ms Nixon said.

“Our local police members will play an important role in the Games as Geelong plays host to regional basketball preliminaries, she said.

Ms Nixon said it was an exciting time for all Victorians.

“The Games will give us the opportunity to showcase our skills and will allow our members to be great ambassadors for Victoria Police and the State, she said.

“There is a keen sense of anticipation amongst all members as the Games get closer. We’re ready and looking forward to playing an integral part in what is a very exciting event for everyone involved.
