Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony Review - Hour Three
Now that all of the teams have arrived, the Queens Baton makes it’s final journey as it leaves the Yarra. Ron Berassi carries the Baton from the edge of the pontoon’s and walks across the water and up a staircase lit up with blue lights to the top of the Swann St Bridge as fireworks rain down on the river. Herb Elliot is the next carrier of the baton.
Carried by eight young Australians of the year comes the flag of the Commonwealth Games Federation. Adam Pine then takes the Commonwealth Games Oath on behalf of all the athletes present.
Dame Kiri TeKanawa the sings Happy Birthday to Queen Elizabeth who turns 80 in 37 days and then God Save the Queen.
Now it’s time for the speeches…
Kathy Freeman then carries the baton into the stadium and then hands it to Ron Clarke who hands it to Margarie Jackson-Nelson, and then govenor John Landy who carries the Baton to the platform where the Queen will now read the message that she placed into the baton one year and one day ago.
As the Queen declares the Games open, fireworks explode around the roof of the MCG. Delta Goodrem then sings the theme song for these games, Together we are One, as a group of rollerbladers ride in with rocket packs on their backs with showering sparks. I really like the song.
To wrap it all up, the river, the MCG and the city towers all ignite in one final eruption of pyrotechnic extravaganza. It is an impressive display which all seems very well choreographed. A lot of planning must have gone into that to get everything running so in sync.

There were winners from each state. One was blind and was lead in by a guide dog. I’ll see if I can find some more info for you tomorrow. For now, I’m off to bed.
