Team Wales names 143 for Commonwealth Games
143 athletes (63 Women and 80 men) have been named as part of the Welsh team to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
The team, which is lighter 85 athletes in comparison to the Manchester 2002 squad, reflects the tightening of selection standards.
Included in the competitive line-up are athletes rich in Olympic and World Championship experience as well as no less than 21 former Commonwealth Games medallists including reigning women’s road race champion, Nicole Cooke from Wick and one-lap wonder, Iwan Thomas – both gold medallists in Manchester and Kuala Lumpur respectively.
Swim star David Davies from Barry will be aiming for 1500m freestyle glory in the Melbourne waters – a title Australia has not lost since 1954.
The youngest member of the team is Swansea’s 14-year old artistic gymnastics star Jessica Gazzi.
