Officials hope to prevent credit card woes
‘Credits cards are not bad. Or good. But they can be used the right way or the wrong way.
That’s how one business teacher explains the concept to students at Ottumwa High School.
“It’s a double-edged sword,” said OHS Marketing Coordinator Mike Cardin. “The ownership is on them.”
By “them” he means every Ottumwa teen who gets a credit card. Because if a student goes through four years at OHS, they will meet Cardin.
“I have every freshman for eight days,” he said.
In that time, he tries to instill some basic financial life-skills.
“One of the topics we discuss is credit,” he said. “First, what it is: It’s your financial reputation.”
State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald agreed in a recent press release that the subject is important; he’s sending Credit Card Literacy program material to 300 high schools, including OHS.’
