Chronic health, mental illness link
‘Australians with chronic health conditions are twice as likely to suffer mental illness than the general population, new research shows.
The study, conducted by SANE Australia and published in the monthly Pfizer Australia Health Report, revealed half of those living with a chronic condition have considered seeking help for depression or anxiety.
Ninety per cent of those went on to visit a GP for treatment.
This was twice the rate of mental illness found in the general population.
As many as one in four Australians suffer from chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, diabetes and heart disease, the research showed.’
