Depression sufferers miss link to pain
‘Most people suffering from major depression do not realize aches and pains are often symptoms, says a study presented to U.S. psychiatrists.
The study, released at an American Psychiatry Association meeting, found 72 percent of depressed patients did not know physical pain was a common symptom — in most cases, the major symptom. They waited more than 11 months on average to seek medical help, and it usually took five visits before their depression was correctly diagnosed.
The lack of awareness that headaches, backaches, intestinal symptoms and vague aches and pains can signal depression causes delays in treatment, the study authors said. Also, the longer a depression goes untreated, the greater the chance it will become chronic.’
