FDA OK’s generic depression Rx Effexor
‘The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it has OK’d the first generic version of anti-depressant Effexor by Wyeth.
The FDA said it approved Israel-based Teva’s venlafaxine tablets in 25 mg, 37.5 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg strengths to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), a move the agency called “an important step in the … effort to increase the availability of lower-cost generic medications.”
As the first generic formulation of Effexor to hit the market, Wyeth has won 180 days of market exclusivity under the Hatch-Waxman Act.’
