Kelly Holmes’s self-harm confession highlights ‘hidden epidemic’
‘Dame Kelly Holmes’s admission that she repeatedly slashed her body with scissors a year before her double gold win in Athens highlights “a hidden epidemic” affecting thousands of people in Britain, a leading mental health charity said yesterday.
An estimated 170,000 people, many of them teenagers, were treated in hospital every year after deliberately harming themselves, said Marjorie Wallace, the chief executive of Sane.
She was speaking after Dame Kelly, 35, revealed her two-month period of self-harm in which she cut her arms and stomach following a series of injuries that threatened to destroy her dreams of Olympic success.’
