Mental ills, depression increase in city, China
‘Mental problems, especially depression and anxiety, are becoming serious problems and about 10 percent of city residents suffer some kind of mental illness, the Shanghai Mental Health Center said yesterday.
The city is to launch a national mental health forum tomorrow when experts, doctors and health officials will discuss causes, treatment and policies concerning mental illness.
“Mental illness has become a very severe challenge to China,” said Dr Xiao Zeping, director of the Shanghai Mental Health Center. “Early intervention can prevent and lessen mental disorders, especially in the urban population that suffers depression and experiences accidents and disasters.”
The center said better research, treatment and intervention are necessary. It cited the rapid rise of depression, sleep difficulties, anxiety and minor mental disorders.’
