New mums to be screened for depression
‘Pregnant women and new mothers will be screened for peri-natal depression under a new national action plan launched in Canberra today.
The Perinatal Mental Health program by beyondblue, the national depression initiative, will see routine psychological assessment of women during pregnancy and the first year after their baby is born, known as the perinatal period.
The program will include regulated training among professional healthcare workers to recognise and manage the depression, and ensure relevant information and professional help is available to women experiencing the illness.
The initiative builds on beyondblue’s four-year research project into peri-natal depression that involved 40,000 pregnant women and 12,000 new mothers across Australia.’
