Eagles’ feathers ruffled over instant messaging
‘EVERY time Open Source dares to use the term instant messenger (capitalised or otherwise) or any permutation thereof, we get yet another letter from AOL’s New York law firm reminding us that it’s a registered trademark belonging their client.
So when Gartner analyst Betsy Burton used the term instant messaging, we had to pull her up and remind her of AOL’s claims that it owns those words.
AOL’s lawyers suggested we use the tongue-twisting “real-time instant communication device” instead.’
