Instant Messaging: another communications
‘Instant Messaging (IM) allows users to send messages in real time but has been primarily seen as a text message substitute. A window is opened enabling a message to be sent to the contact. Unlike e-mails IMs appear instantly on the recipient’s screen. An equivalent of a chat room allows IMs to be distributed to more than two persons simultaneously. Unlike e-mails IM systems permit the sender to see whether IM contacts are on-line through flagging the name.
Most IM systems in use are for non-enterprise users; they can be downloaded through AOL, Microsoft’s MSN and other widely used services. They are not secure enough for enterprise purposes and perhaps this is reflected in the apparent fact that many security packages do not cover IM security – obviously, any viruses spread in ‘real time’.’
