Microsoft, Reuters and AOL launch new instant messaging system for City traders
‘MICROSOFT, AOL and Reuters, three of the world’s biggest technology and information companies, are set to transform the way financial market traders communicate by joining together to launch a messaging service this week. The Business has learned that Microsoft, the world’s largest software provider, has been working on a project to overcome the compliance problems that have prevented its MSN Messenger service being used by financial institutions.
An announcement is expected to be made on Monday by Jeff Raikes, president of Microsoft’s business division, and executives from AOL, the internet service provider, and Reuters, the business and news information company. Millions of people use MSN Messenger, a popular and free service allowing users to send messages in real time on computers in homes and offices. Users identify the friends and colleagues they want to talk to by creating a personal address book on their computers; when these contacts are online they are able to hold written conversations. But this technology has never been allowed in financial institutions because of fears that price-sensitive information could be passed on without any means of monitoring what is written.’
