Microsoft to take Communicator to the Web
Microsoft is putting some pressure on extending their newly released Office Communicator product. I just came back from a conference on collaboration technologies and was impressed with the force being put on the product by Microsoft. It’s clear they want it to lead their communication advantage.
In response to this, they have decided to extend Office Communicator IM to a web-based portal. It will be called Office Communicator Web Access. This new feature was announced at the conference (CTC2005) by Anoop Gupta, who has clearly defined it as a way to extend presence into more aspects of the online and offline communication experience: knowing when and how to contact someone, easily, wherever you or they may be. Web Access will let people access the IM system through any internet enabled device - so, the new product not only extends to the computer system, but also to any mobile device with internet service.
Office Communicator (code-named Istanbul) is an integrated communications client designed to enable information workers to communicate in real time. It merges IM, voice, video, telephony and Web conferencing into Microsoft Office by integrating with the Communications Server—similar to the way Outlook plugs into Exchange. (Link)
Web Access is scheduled to be released in about a month’s time as a beta product.
