Tracking instant messaging’s popularity in the Valley
‘Apparently, much of Phoenix considers the phone to be so 20th century.
A recent survey found that 65 percent of Internet-savvy Phoenix residents use instant messaging, and 39 percent of them send as many or more instant messages than e-mails.
According to the AOL IM survey, 25 percent of the Valley’s IM users change their away messages every day. Of those, 58 percent use the away message to let friends know where they are, and 20 percent leave an alternate way they can be reached. The instant messaging doesn’t stop at home. Forty percent of Phoenix residents surveyed who use IM at work say they send instant messages to plan activities with family or friends, and 32 percent share photos. You may surmise that 100 percent of them do not work in their supervisors’ line of sight. ‘
