‘Voice-over Instant Messaging, or VoIM, is like instant messaging, only with talking. It allows you to make phone calls to anywhere in the world for free, using a high-speed Web connection.
A quick instant-messaging primer for anyone who isn’t already IM’ing: When you log on to your chosen service, such as Yahoo! or AOL, you can see who among your friends and family is online at the moment. You start up a “chat” with a person by clicking on his or her chosen screen name, and type a message. As soon as you press enter, the message pops up instantly on a screen that both of you can see.
