Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have done their best to put on a happy face lately, even cuddling and smiling at the People’s Choice Awards. But their apparent truce comes only shortly after the newlyweds hit their roughest patch: a blowout in Miami that left Jessica, 24, in tears, her 31-year-old husband on an LA-bound plane without her - and some insiders questioning the future of their marriage.

“I’d never seen them that bad,” says a friend. “I don’t know how much longer it will last.”

Another pal agrees: “Let’s just say the year didn’t start out right for the two of them.”

According to sources, tension plagued Nick and Jessica’s Miami trip from nearly the moment they arrived on December 28 at the elegant Four Seasons hotel. While they had initially planned to rent “a beautiful, ocean-front mansion” in the peaceful enclave of Sunny Isles “and reconnect with friends,” Jessica decided she wanted to be closer to the trendy nightclubs in South Beach. “So at the last minute, they checked into The Four Seasons,” says a source. Disappointed, Nick still complied with Jessica’s wishes, taking her to different parties every night - but the friction between them was noticeable. And while there were some warm moments, those seemed only for the benefit of camera crews, which were taping them for Newlyweds.
