‘AS PRESIDING judge at California’s Santa Barbara Superior Court, Rodney Melville prides himself in conducting cases with dignity and decorum. Tomorrow, however, as the circus of Michael Jackson’s long-awaited child molestation trial rolls into town, Melville finds himself cast in the unfamiliar role of a ringmaster struggling to rein in his wayward troupe.

A near-avalanche of leaks in recent months has put many of the salacious details of the allegations against the super-star into the public domain and made a mockery of Judge Melville’s attempts to restrict the flow of pre-trial information with a sea of gagging orders and sealed court records. He has had to order both legal teams to cool off because the prosecution, led by an attorney nicknamed Mad Dog, has been trading thinly disguised insults with Jackson’s defence lawyers for months.’
