Choosing a pedometer

As I said earlier, I’ve been hunting around for a while trying to find the best pedometer to buy. A lot of the reviews on websites gave mixed opinions about every make and model under the sun. No one pedometer seemed to stand out as flawless, so I decided not to buy online and go down to a local store and check out what they had on offer.

After looking at about 6 different pedometers with all sorts of features, I decided on a Yamax (Step 1) Digiwalker Pedometer. For a start, it came with a handy guide on the 10,000 Steps program and seemed to be easy to use.

Two of the most frequent complaints about pedometers in general are:

  1. They can be easily dropped (and broken)
  2. They are hard to open, or the catch breaks

With the Yamax I bought, the clip/catch seems pretty solid - not too hard to open up either and there’s a safety clip that works in case the other clip comes off (it did for me once when I was walking and I was glad that I didn’t drop it).

I haven’t used the extra features yet (such as how many calories I’ve burned, or inputting my weight) but I will once I’ve got the hang of using my pedometer.

Most pedometers require you to measure your step length in order to set it to estimate distance. Where and how you wear the pedometer will also influence step counting accuracy. The pedometer must be straight up and down, not tilted.
The Digiwalker 701 counts steps and estimates distance based on your average stride length, which you can set in increments of .25 feet. It estimates calories burned based on your weight without regard to your speed. Rated tops for accuracy and reliability of step counting, including when worn all day.
