Australian Pharmacy Reform Negotiations at ‘Sharp End’: Minister
‘Long-running negotiations for a new agreement with pharmacists over competition reform and drug subsidies have reached “the sharp end”, says federal Health Minister Tony Abbott.
The federal government yesterday presented the Pharmacy Guild of Australia with a formal proposal for the five-year agreement.
The deal will cover pharmacist payments under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), regulations restricting competitors from setting up within 1.5km of existing pharmacies and the entry into the market by major supermarket chains.
Mr Abbott said while there had been good progress in the negotiations, he would be prepared to extend the deadline by a month.
“The (existing) agreement is currently scheduled to expire on the 30th of September - just a month away,” Mr Abbott told reporters in Perth.’
