Glaxo, AstraZeneca high on asthma, heartburn
‘GlaxoSmithKline Plc and AstraZeneca Plc, Europe’s biggest and third-largest drugmakers, may say first-quarter profit rose after the companies cut expenses and increased sales of medicines for asthma and heartburn.
Glaxo’s net income probably increased 5.4 per cent to 1.09 billion pounds ($2.07 billion), the median estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. AstraZeneca may say profit gained 16 per cent to $926 million, a survey of seven analysts showed. The London-based companies are scheduled to report earnings April 28.
Drugmakers including Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest, are trimming costs to compensate for setbacks with new drugs. Glaxo, facing expenses related to U.S. manufacturing violations, is reducing marketing spending and relying on its Advair asthma treatment for sales growth. AstraZeneca is promoting its Nexium ulcer pill and cutting research costs after the Iressa cancer drug failed clinical tests and Exanta, a blood thinner, was blocked by the Food and Drug Administration.’
