Panel Endorses Heart Drug for Black Patients
“Despite its racial overtone, U.S. health advisers have endorsed BiDil, a drug specifically targeted to treat heart failure in African-Americans.
“The action by a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel makes BiDil, made by NitroMed Inc. of Lexington, Mass., the first such medicine directed at a specific racial group, the Washington Post Latest News about Washington Post reported Friday.
“The panel voted unanimously to recommend the FDA approve BiDil for patients with severe heart failure. The FDA usually accepts such recommendation.
“BiDil has generated intense public debate. Supporters say it offers an urgently needed treatment to a group that suffers more from many health problems and has been long neglected by medical research.
Opponents say marketing the drug this way would promote racial stereotyping and the discredited idea that there are fundamental genetic differences among races.”
