Benedict XVI Watches Film on Predecessor
‘German-born Benedict XVI watched a film Thursday about his Polish predecessor that included scenes of Nazi persecution of Poles and Jews, prompting him to denounce the barbarity of World War II that both he and John Paul lived through.
The made-for-TV movie “Karol, A Man Who Became Pope,” was shown to Benedict in a Vatican auditorium, with Italian politicians and media personalities among the VIP guests.
The film depicts the life of Karol Wojtyla, who became Pope John Paul II. It begins in September 1939, when World War II broke out with Nazi invasion of Poland and the future pope was a university student in Krakow, Poland. It ends with his election as pontiff in 1978.
The movie was shown in two parts on successive evenings on Italian television during the days of the conclave that elected Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to succeed John Paul.’
