Pope’s hospitalization casts shadow over Easter preparations

‘Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II is recovering from throat surgery after complications of the flu but two hospitalizations in less than a month have cast a shadow over his role in Roman Catholicism’s main festival.

A calendar published on the Vatican (news - web sites) website in January said the pope would personally celebrate all the ceremonies of Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to Easter, which this year falls on March 27.

But after his operation to ease breathing which has made speaking more difficult Vatican sources said Wednesday his schedule during the week to Easter would be cut down compared to last year.

There are notably serious doubts that he could possibly attend the traditional way of the cross procession, around the Colosseum, on Good Friday, if it is held at all.’
