Accelerating Digital Radio
Think the only new thing happening in radio these days concerns the two satellite radio companies, XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio? Not so. Get ready to hear about something new from conventional terrestrial radio broadcasters in 2005.
Sure, the satellite companies have a lot coming up. Sirius (nasdaq: SIRI - news - people ) has about a year to go until it gets Howard Stern on board, while XM (nasdaq: XMSR - news - people ) said last week it had surpassed 3.2 million subscribers and had signed popular radio chatters Dr. Laura Schlessinger and G. Gordon Liddy.
But the terrestrial broadcasters have something new to talk about this year, too. It’s called high-definition radio, or HD Radio. Using new digital transmitters that work in parallel to a radio station’s analog broadcast equipment, radio stations will be able to improve their sound quality–the old phrase is “AM that sounds like FM, FM that sounds like a CD”–and offer other services around their programming.
