Howard Stern launches Satellite Radio into Orbit
Just over 12 months ago SIRIUS Satellite Radio announced it had secured controversial disc jockey Howard Stern to join their network. A little over a year later and the deal is paying big dividends for SIRIUS, and also it’s rival XM.
In the last 12 months, XM have doubled it’s subscribers to five million while SIRIUS has increased its subscriber base from about a million to 2.2 million which analysts believe is due to the huge awareness that Howard Stern has raised for the entire Satellite Radio industry.
By the end of this holiday season, SIRIUS expects to have more than three million subscribers but will still be only half the size of their competitor, XM.
While Howard Stern is one draw card for the Satellite underdog, SIRIUS also has a few other exclusives in its stable. Martha Stewart has her own channel, Martha Stewart Living Radio, and SIRIUS also has exclusive rights to satellite radio transmission of the NBA and NFL games.
