XM Satellite Radio Can Go Along on Your Walk

xm2go satellite radioCity dwellers may be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss over satellite radio is about. The services seem like they were meant for suburbanites who spend hours in their cars every day.

But now anyone can enjoy XM Satellite Radio while out walking around. Together with Delphi, XM has introduced a portable receiver, the MyFi, which is starting to show up in stores and will be widely available next month (xmradio.com).

The $350 device is the size of a slightly plump hand-held organizer. Like other XM units, it can receive all of its 130 or so satellite channels, offering music, news, talk and sports (by subscription; the basic price is $9.95 a month).

The MyFi has a rechargeable battery, a backlit liquid-crystal screen that displays station and song information and an easy-to-use wheel and number keys for selecting stations.

For direct listening, the MyFi comes with earbuds. But it can also be linked to a car or home stereo, either with its built-in FM transmitter or with the various cradles, cables and antennas that are included in the package.

Best of all, the MyFi has an internal memory card that can store about five hours of music programming - more if it’s news or talk - at the push of a button. You can even set up the unit to record in advance.

For urbanites, the recording feature can come in handy if you are tuned to a live channel and it’s time to descend into the subway. By switching to the recorded My XM programming, you can keep listening even when the satellite signal is blocked.
