VoIP In Kenya
After months of speculation, the Communications Commission of Kenya has released its grand plan of introducing cheaper telephone calls. CCK has published its strategy to reduce the cost of calls made through the Internet, technically known as the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
The advanced technology allows callers to make very cheap international and long-distance calls using Internet technology. At the same time, the technology allows companies with several branches across the country to make free calls within branches. For example, a company based in Nairobi with branches in Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret would be allowed to make the connection through the Internet, and make free calls.
However, to take advantage of the cheap calls, one has to have a personal computer and be connected to the Internet. The Internet service provider must have a network that has the software needed to transmit voice communication.
Details of the plans are contained in a CCK document titled “Proposed Guidelines for the Implementation and Provision of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Services.”
