What is Bellster?
The big news of the week is that’s there’s a new peer-to-peer systerm to compete with Skype called Bellster - brought to you by Jeff Pulver. The big advantage over Skype is that you can make free calls to landlines - but there’s a catch. In true peer-to-peer style, the system works if you share your good fortune - i.e. what you have - with others. In other words, to make some calls, you’ll have to share your phone line with others.
The Bellster Network keeps a tally of calls that you make and that you give to others. It’s like getting a calling card that starts with a few credits. One credit is used for each call and you get credits for each call that you give. As long as your balance remains positive, you can place calls.
What do you need?
- Connect your PC to your local phone network.
- The PC needs to run The Asterisk Open-Source PBX.
Many of us have free calling regions and unused minutes in our phone plans, by sharing minutes, you get expand your free access considerably. Even if you don’t have free minutes, the minutes you give might cost significantly less than those you take – balancing out in your favor in the end.
